What Are History Timelines?

History timelines are 3-ring binders filled with scrapbook pages of history that the girls create themselves. Every page is devoted to one person, place, or thing in history. There might be drawings, pictures printed from the internet, ticket stubs, or any number of visuals accompanying the writing. The kids write whatever facts or anecdotes about the subject matter that they personally find fascinating or memorable.

They are essentially creating their own history books, adding only the things that delight them, or pique their interest, or resonate with them philosophically. There is no hero-making, no rewriting history, no leaving out minority voices. This system is convenient because the 3-ring binder allows us to skip around history cafeteria-style (which is how adults learn and assimilate new information - how often are our adult experiences completely linear?), adding pages where they belong chronologically.
